Protein deficiency query

Postby mish » Mon Sep 28, 2009 9:23 pm

Hi Peter
I attended your last workshop in Durban and am slowly introducing different raw elements into my diet.
I have a question for you. I have fibromyalgia and have just found out through doing my own research, that one of the main causes may be protein deficiency and that amino acids in the correct proportions and in adequate amounts reverse this deficiency by supplying the pancreas and intestinal glands with the ingredients necessary to synthesize adequate digestive enzymes to digest the dietary intake. The research also tells me that I may have a sulphur deficiency. It suggests taking supplements for the above, as well as pancreatic enzymes.
1.I know that Hemp is high in protein and contains all 20 amino acids. Firstly, how much should I take and should I be taking any other amino acid supplement?
2. In your notes, Spirulina is also listed as NB source of protein. Again, how much do I take?
3. Can you recommend what I would take for the sulphur deficiency and pancreatic enzymes?
I would really appreciate your help, as the condition is quite debilitating and really believe there is a cure, contrary to what the doctors say.
Kind regards
Michelle

Hi Michelle
I just joined the forum and well it seems no one has replied to this thread really. If still relevant: you need your body weight in grams of protein. E.g. If you're 60Kgs, 60g protein should be more than sufficient, even for athletes. I go by the estimated protein content, i.e if a block of tofu is 10.7% protein, then 300g would give you over 30g of your daily requirement.

good luck =]

Hi Michelle
Apologies for the late reply.
Hemp powder provides around 35% protein by wight. So 10g will give you around 3g of complete protein.
Spirulina is the highest protein containing wholefood known at 65% by weight.
Conventional protein requirement estimates are high.
The minimum protein requirements for a moderately active female is between 15g and 23g.
30 - 60g per day is appropriate in addressing protein related disorders and for strength training.
Remember that most of what you eat in a day has a protein element, and combined with protein rich superfoods, it is easy to fulfill the body's needs.
In your case I would also recommend getting Sunwarrior protein which is a raw vegan protein supplement made from brown rice.

Green veg juice and wheatgrass juice will also greatly benefit you.
For sulfur I highly recommend taking MSM daily. Start slow and build up to double the recommended dose on the box over a few weeks.

I don't know of any pancreatic specific enzymes available in SA. I use Amipro enzymes. Take them on an empty stomach before bed.

Hope this helps,
