Mucuna Hot Chocolate

A potent, mood elevating elixir, this hot chocolate is made with raw cacao and Mucuna pruriens. Raw cacao is well recognised as a mood-boosting food due to the feelgood phytonutrients and, even better, it’s a medicine delivery system which means that anything you combine with it is driven deeper into the body. In this case it’s Mucuna, affectionately known around Soaring Free HQ as Mucuna Matata (means ‘no worries’ for the rest of your days). This potent plant boosts dopamine in the system and is an effective antidepressant!

2 C plant-based milk
⅓ C coconut milk or coconut cream
4 tsp Mucuna Powder (2 daily doses for 2 servings)
⅓ C Cacao Powder
2 Tbsp Cacao Butter
1 Tbsp nut butter (cashew, hazelnut or almond)
1 tsp vanilla extract or powder
pinch of salt
liquid sweetener of choice


Step 1:

Gently heat all of the ingredients over low heat for about 5 minutes. Stir with a whisk once or twice to combine while it's warming up, or use a blender.

Step 2:

When it's ready, pour into mugs.

Step 3:

Serve with extra coconut cream, a dusting of cacao powder and cinnamon.
